Hello Classmates of the Class of 1965!

Remember those days of good ole Morse High, the pit where we had our gym classes, lunch, before the bell activities and Popham Beach? You can get to relive those memories at our upcoming 45th Reunion Weekend.  Wow!!  Has it really been that long?  It sure seems like yesterday.  To celebrate our 45th, we have planned a special three-day weekend.  We are hoping everyone in the class will join us!

Our 45th Reunion will be held June 11-13, 2010 coordinated with the Bath High School Alumni weekend.  Please review the list of activities we have set up. We sincerely hope you will be able to attend every event but if that is not possible, please come to whatever weekend event you can.  We had originally planned a more ambitious celebration that would’ve included a BBQ at the Kelp Shed.  However, the cost became prohibitive so we postponed the BBQ to another time.

 *        Pre-reunion event:  Each year, reunion classes are invited to decorate a downtown merchant’s window, using the space to share memories of their own particular class. If you have some ideas for decorating this window, want to help with the decorating or can loan memorabilia, contact Linda Ashe Bishop at linda.bishop@pearson.com .  What do you want to see?  What great pics or stories can you share that nobody has seen since 1965?  Your ideas are most welcome! Your priceless treasures will be regarded with great respect and thoughtful care.

*        Daytime Friday, June 11th   For our golfers… The 50th year class hosts the Blue & White Golf Classic for the Bath High School Alumni Association.  For specific information about this 2010 event, contact Brian Hatch at bhatch@gwi.net .

*        Evening Friday, June 11th   Dance time! Popular with reunion attendees is the annual Alumni Association Ice Breaker Dance.  The dance is open to all alumni and is held at the Bath Country Club on Whiskeag Road. Past participants say that this dance is a favorite activity to connect early in the week-end with Morse High alum from various graduation years.  The dance begins at 8 PM and goes until folks get tired, or midnight, whichever comes first! Admission is complimentary, contributions are welcome. A cash bar and light snacks are available.

*        Saturday, June 12th.   Open house, the banquet and our BIG EVENT—the after banquet party!   As the oldest running and largest alumni association in the country, the Bath High School Alumni Association has planned some daytime activities including an open house at the Alumni room at Morse High from 10 AM to 1 PM.  The Morse Junior class and the Alumni Banquet Committee will host school tours and sell memorabilia including Morse High School chairs and rockers.

On Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the Bath Middle School (what we knew as the Junior High) is the 119th Alumni Banquet. Each incremental 5th year class is recognized by filing into the gymnasium together.  Please be at the Junior High by 4:00 as we will meet in an assigned ‘home room’ (talk about a blast from the past!!!)  We will use this brief time (while we are waiting to line up) to talk about class plans and a class gift for our 50th.  The parade of classes into the gym will begin at 5:00.  The banquet tickets are $15.00 per person.  The Alumni Association has asked that anyone from our class who is planning to attend the banquet to reserve their tickets through our Class of ‘65 reunion committee.

Right after the banquet…. is our Class Reunion Party in the function room of the Kennebec Tavern on Commercial Street.  Join us for groovy 60’s music and great company. A cash bar will be available and hors d’oeurves will be served.  The cost for our main reunion event will be $30 per person.

*        Sunday, June 13th   We have planned a special new event for Sunday.  We have invited the classes of 1964 and 1966 to join us for Sunday Brunch!  Located at the Kennebec Tavern, we will enjoy our time together on the outdoor veranda under the awning, overlooking the Kennebec River.  Brunch will be served from 9:30 AM to 12 PM.  The cost will be $15.00 per person.

*        Class Directory:  We will update our class directory and include any new information that you submit to us so we can see what everyone is up to these days.  The cost will be $5.00 if you attend the Reunion and $7 if you would like us to mail it to you.  Even if you cannot come to the Reunion, please fill out the questionnaire attached to this letter and mail it back to us.

We have decided to give our 45th Class Gift to Regional School Unit 1 (Bath, West Bath, Phippsburg, Arrowsic and Woolwich).  The gift will go to the Summer Reading Enhancement Program.  This program is designed to improve the reading skills of pre-high school students.  This program has had a phenomenal success rate but was a victim of budget cuts.  Please be generous with your contribution.

Future events that are in the planning stages are a summer cruise (either cruise line or summer Maine windjammer), a BBQ at the Kelp Shed and a 65th Birthday Bash for those that want to get together in an off reunion year.  Then there is the grand event of our 50th Reunion in 2015 which isn’t that far away.  At that reunion we sponsor the Blue and White Golf Classic (i.e. we do all the logistical support and more)!

Also, we have started a monthly get together for those in the local area.  We go to a different restaurant in the area monthly and have a great deal of fun!!  Let us know if you are interested in attending.    Keep in touch with us at the Class of 65 web site  www.morsehigh65.com

Members of your reunion committee are Joyce Pennell Marco (jmarco@gwi.net) Bruce Lee, Linda Perry, Richard Nichols (rnichols@gwi.net), Andrea Doak Conner (acon@suscom-maine.net), John Cooke (jdcooke61@myfairpoint.net), Linda Ashe Bishop (linda.bishop@pearson.com)  and Cindy Durgan Sheldon (wwsheldon@suscom-maine.net).  Please feel free to contact any of us if you have questions or needs.

A FINAL NOTE:  PLANNING FOR OUR 50TH

Starting in 2011 we must begin to raise money for our 50th Reunion Gift.  Traditionally, the 50th Reunion gifts have been the most generous of the Class gifts of lesser years.  These gifts have been used for full scholarships, donations for school items that are nice to have but are not in the budget, or assistance with budget shortfalls, funding support for programs with significant cuts.

Each spring and starting next year we will send out a newsletter to update you on planning for the 50th.  We will request donations.  Some classes are raising funds by asking each alumni to donate $100 per year ($8.33 per month) until the 50th.  If we were able to do that or something close, we would be able to give a significant class gift.
